CDL Requirements for the Trucking Industry

The trucking industry is one of the most common industries requiring a CDL. Within the trucking industry, there are two main types of CDLs: Class A and Class B. The Class A CDL is required for drivers operating a combination of vehicles with a total weight of 26,001 pounds or more, where the vehicle being towed weighs more than 10,000 pounds.

A Class B CDL is required for drivers operating a single vehicle with a weight of 26,001 pounds or more, or a combination of vehicles with a total weight of less than 26,001 pounds, but with the vehicle being towed weighing 10,000 pounds or less.

Endorsements are also required for drivers transporting hazardous materials, double or triple trailers, and passengers. Depending on the job and what’s being hauled, you may need additional endorsements. Common endorsements required include:

• Hazardous materials
• Double/triple trailers
• Passenger transport
• Tanker

CDL Requirements for the Construction Industry

Certain jobs in construction will require you to hold a CDL. Depending on the type of vehicle being operated, a Class A or Class B CDL may be required. Additionally, endorsements may be needed for specific types of equipment, such as a crane or bulldozer.

It’s important to note that even if a vehicle falls below the weight requirements for a CDL, the driver may still need a CDL if they are transporting hazardous materials. CDL Requirements for the Transportation of Passengers

CDLs are also required for the transportation of passengers. A Class B CDL with a passenger endorsement is required for drivers of vehicles carrying more than 16 passengers. If the vehicle is carrying more than 16 passengers and pulling a trailer, a Class A CDL with a passenger endorsement is required.

Common jobs that will require a passenger endorsement and a CDL include school bus drivers, coach bus drivers, and drivers of city buses. The agriculture industry also requires CDLs for certain types of vehicles. Depending on the type of vehicle being operated, a Class A or Class B CDL may be required. Endorsements are also necessary for tank vehicles, hazardous materials, and double or triple trailers.

While some jobs and vehicles in the agriculture industry require a CDL, it is important to note that farmers are not generally required to hold a CDL to operate farming equipment on their land. Some vehicles in the emergency response industry require a CDL to operate. Depending on the type of vehicle being operated, a Class A or Class B CDL may be necessary, and endorsements for hazardous materials and tank vehicles may be needed.
