Understanding the CDL Process in Mississippi

The Mississippi Department of Public Safety (DPS) oversees the state CDL program, ensuring that all commercial drivers meet federal and state standards for the safe operation of commercial vehicles. To begin your journey toward obtaining a CDL in Mississippi, you must first meet several basic requirements.

Applicants must be at least 18 years old for intrastate driving or 21 for interstate driving. You’ll need a valid Mississippi driver’s license and must provide proof of U.S. citizenship or lawful permanent residency. Passing a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical examination and maintaining a clean driving record are also crucial prerequisites.

Steps to Obtain Your CDL in Mississippi

Complete CDL Training

As of February 7, 2022, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) implemented new Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) regulations. These regulations apply to all individuals seeking to obtain a CDL for the first time, upgrade an existing CDL class, or add a hazardous materials, passenger, or school bus endorsement to their CDL.

Under these regulations, aspiring CDL holders in Mississippi must complete a prescribed program of theory and behind-the-wheel training from a provider listed on FMCSA’s Training Provider Registry (TPR) before taking the CDL skills test or knowledge test for an endorsement.

Coastal Truck Driving School is proud to be a registered ELDT provider, ensuring that our training program meets and exceeds these federal requirements. Our comprehensive curriculum covers all required theory subjects, including:

  • Basic Operation
  • Safe Operating Procedures
  • Advanced Operating Practices
  • Vehicle Systems and Reporting Malfunctions
  • Non-Driving Activities

By choosing Coastal Truck Driving School, you can be confident that you’re receiving training that not only prepares you for your CDL test but also meets all federal ELDT requirements, setting you up for a successful career in commercial driving.

Pass the CDL Skills Test

Once you’ve completed your training and held your Commercial Learner’s Permit for at least 14 days, you can schedule your CDL skills test. This test consists of three parts: vehicle inspection, basic control skills, and a road test.

After passing all required tests, you’ll need to pay the necessary fees to receive your CDL. At this point, you’ll officially become a licensed commercial driver in Mississippi.
